Thirst | Face Replacement
Over the course of 6 months, we created over 300 creature shots for the independent feature film, "Thirst." In addition to the half-robot, six-legged CG alien, we created; digital doubles, face replacements, and, of course, explosions, explosions, explosions.
In several scenes, we needed the Alien to pick up the actors and toss them around. To do this, we scanned the actors on-set and in wardrobe to make digital doubles as quickly and efficiently as possible. Once these were created, our animators could manipulate them directly with the CG Alien. In other scenes, the Alien needed to suck the fluid from the actor's body, leaving their face a dried corpse. To do this we created digital head scans of the actors and merged them with a scan of a dried corpse. This allowed our animators to morph between the live-action face and the sucked-in face. We then added a layer of facial expressions on-top to keep the face "alive" while it morphed to the dried corpse state.
