Over the course of 6 months, we created over 300 creature shots for the independent feature film, "Thirst." In addition to the half-robot, six-legged CG alien, we created; digital doubles, face replacements, and, of course, explosions, explosions, explosions.
For the grand finale we need the Alien to explode into a massive fireball. To do this, we took the Alien 3D geometry and chopped it up into hundreds of pieces. We attached those to a hard-body simulation of the alien bursting apart, then layered that into a fluid simulation of the explosion fireball.
